PrivateFly, an online booking platform for private jet flights, has announced the winners for the Private Jet Photography Awards 2013, which were launched to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first private jet flight.

With a prize of £1,000 for the overall winner, hundreds of photographers applied, entering their photographs in five categories that included ground, air, detail, speed and crew.

“The collection of winning photography is a fantastic visual celebration of the private jet as it celebrates its golden age,” said Adam Twidell, CEO of PrivateFly. “An iconic symbol recognised as the pinnacle of air travel.”

Twidell also thanked the judging panel, which included Alud Davies, a contributor to Corporate Jet Investor and founder of BizJetBlogger, as well as Caroline Metcalfe from Conde Nast Traveller, Alan Capel from Alamy, Manfred Zoller from fotoMAGAZIN and five aviation and travel photographers.

Jose Maria Ocana won the overall prize – as well as the crew category – for his stunning shot from inside a private jet cockpit at night. “I was the captain of this flight – I love to combine my two passions,” said Ocana.

Photographing a Learjet flying over Lake Michigan at dawn, Jim Koepnick’s beautiful shot was the winner in the air category. “The actual shot was not planned, but I was in radio contact with my photo pilot partner,” said Koepnick. “I wanted a clear background and to show the lake below the aircraft.”

Having won the overall competiton with his crew photograph, Jose Maria Ocana was unlucky to find such strong competiton in the air category, as his nightime shot showing a private jet flying over a dramatic city skyline would have made a very worthy winner.

Davies said Nick Gleis “captures the romance of business aviation” with his photograph of a private jet parked at Van Nuys Airport. The photographer said: “This shoot almost didn’t happen due to rain. But I saw the clouds clearing and I knew there was going to be a spectacular sunset. I knew this shot was going to be a rare opportunity…and it was.”
