FAA issues NOTAM for Presidential State of the Union Address
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) restricting airspace use around Washington during the Presidential State of the Union Address.
The State of the Union Address is given yearly by the US President to Congress. It includes budgetary and economic reports, along with any legislative agenda for the coming year.
The NOTAM is issued for 30 January, and covers an area below FL180 in an area within a 30 nautical mile radius of Washington National Airport (DCA). The NOTAM is active between 8pm and 11pm local time.
The restriction will largely disrupt any business jet operations at DCA. Regular scheduled flights into DCA are not affected, as long as they meet the long list of stringent rules for operating in the area.
Although a number of smaller airports will be closed to traffic, active IFR (Instrument Flight Rules) Part 135 and Part 91 flights will be allowed to use Dulles International Airport (IAD), Baltimore Washington International Airport (BWI), and Manassas Regional/Davis Airport (HEF) only.
