How much! EBACE expenses and aircraft

The static display of aircraft at EBACE 2014 in Geneva

Denial. Anger. Bargaining. Depression. Acceptance. The five stages of signing-off someone’s expenses from EBACE are tough.

When a can of coke costs $5 and a night in a two star hotel starts at $190 things can quickly get out of control even for the frugal. (I am deliberately staying away from the price of drinks in the night clubs and five star hotels to avoid shocking  people who are still feeling delicate.)

It also shows why Europeans are net sellers of aircraft.

In May 2008, $1 would buy you Eu0.65 or CHF1.4. Now its gets you Eu0.8 or CHF0.9. When you are dealing in millions this is a massive difference. New aircraft look particularly expensive. It also means that European sellers, who are receiving dollars, can discount more than US sellers.

EBACE is a fantastic show – the people who attend, the brilliant organisation and the fantastically convenient venue with the static display next to the exhibition hall – but it is no surprise that Switzerland tops both the Big Mac and Caviar indexes.

EBACE 2016 will take place between May 24 and 26.
